Analysis of London by William Blake Essay - 991 Words
Historic poetry is unique in the respect that it gives readers an insight into a certain historic time period that textbooks cannot provide. Historic poetry not only gives a description of the time period but it allows the readers to connect to the emotions of the poet and to a point experience what it would have felt to live in that era. This is the case with William Blakeââ¬â¢s poem London. London not only describes the horrid condition of Englandââ¬â¢s lower class during the industrial revolution but it also connects this description with a strong emotion response from the speaker. Blakeââ¬â¢s stylistic and structure choices through out the poem paint a dark and morbid view of London but the emotion of the poem remains divide. The words of theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦The speakerââ¬â¢s apparent age suggests that London is a poem of experience rather than innocence. This is an important distinction because the experience of the speaker means that he is old enough t o envision an ideal world and to ask questions and make judgment towards the people in power. It is from the format of the speakerââ¬â¢s judgments and questions that the poem is able to evoke the two emotions of sympathy and bitterness in the readers. The delivery of the speakerââ¬â¢s comments about Londonââ¬â¢s inhabitants creates a separation between him and the events of the poem. The speaker makes mention of people but it is always of what they have left behind or what he can hear from them. For example the speaker says ââ¬Å"In the cry of every Manâ⬠( Blake 5) instead of saying he sees the men crying. The wording of the statements implies that the speaker is not talking to the lower class of London but rather using them as examples to address and chastise the upper class for ignoring the hardships that continue to endure around them. However, because he is not directly interacting with the people who need his help, it feels like he is doing this for his own gain and that he is just using the people to prove a point about the running of the government. Essay about Was Socrates Wise - 581 Words
Was Socrates Wise? Webster defines wise as: (1) having or showing good judgment; (2) informed; (3) learned; (4) shrewd or cunning. In my opinion, Socrates was wise in all aspects of the word. If I were placed in his position and were to make the same decisions, I would not consider myself wise. I would consider myself to be a great fool, but given the circumstances and the parties involved I believe that Socrates made proper decisions in his defense. Socrates knew that the jury was prejudiced against him from the start and addressed it immediately. He tried to prove the oracle wrong by examining reputedly wise men and he realized that they thought that they knew things that they did not and this made them unwise. It wa s after these encounters that Socrates realized that the oracle meant that human wisdom is worth little or nothing.(19) It was this realization that made Socrates wise. Socrates knew that he would be convicted and sentenced to death, so his speech on death was not foolish. He was just addressing the inevitable. He says that a man of any worth does not think of life and death or of anything except whether he is acting as a good or bad man. Socrates does not fear death, for no one knows whether death may not be the greatest good that can happen to man. But men fear it as if they knew quite well that it was the greatest of evils.(24) Socrates was borderline foolish when he discussed his political career and how he was ill suited for it because was just and made his decisions accordingly. This was a thinly veiled allusion to the moral character of the politicians of Greece, which must have been insulting and would not help acquit him. After Socrates was found guilty, he accepted the death penalty by insulting the jury again. Sexual Abuse Essays - Rape, Sex Crimes, Sexual Abuse,
Sexual Abuse Michael Stiefvater Sexual Abuse At one time I thought about how child sexual abuse was growing concern in our society. Stories and interviews on TV and in the paper would keep me aware, but I always thought about how it was always happening to everyone else. One figure that lingered around in my mind was that one in six children would be a victim of sexual abuse. Having six children of my own I thought of these statistics. Knocking on wood so to speak, until it happened in our family. Sexual abuse can destroy a family, especially when the perpetrator is considered a member of the family. It is frustrating when someone that is trusted betrays that trust. Family members become angry , divided and deny that anything is wrong. The effects on the victim is the toughest thing to deal with. The Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) defines child abuse and neglect as at a minimum, any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker, which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm. Some states have exceptions, but the term child refers to someone not yet 18. Then CAPTA defines sexual abuse as: the employment, use, persuasion, inducement, enticement, or coercion of any child to engage in, or assist any other person to engage in, any sexual explicit conduct or simulation of such conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of such conduct; or the rape, and in cases of caretaker or inter-familial relationships, statutory rape, molestation, prostitution, or any other form of sexual exploitation of children, or incest with children.

Tips for Writing an Argumentative Essay on Abortion
Tips for Writing an Argumentative Essay on Abortion Argumentative essays must include certain elements if the reader is to find them effective. It is regrettable if an essay omits key aspects that make it evident that the writer was not informed about the topic on which he or she chose to write. An argumentative essay is like a strategic decision that company managers make: it requires proper planning. At the very least, a writer of an argumentative essay has to dedicate a couple of minutes to draft the topic that will best be tackled in the argumentative essay. What this infers is that not all topics can be discussed academically. In general, argumentative essays cover topics that have conflicting viewpoints or conclusions. In light of this, it has been noted that many students make the mistake of writing argumentative essays on topics that interest them, but which do not have sufficient back up evidence. The underlying point here is that an argumentative essay is shaped not by a profound belief, but an explanation as to why the writer believes that his/her concept is reasonable. In short, choosing a topic to argue about must be guided by the presence of logical evidence that can substantiate the argument offered. For instance, when writing an argumentative essay on abortion, start by assessing the benefits and dangers of abortion. You will then take your stand and state, for example, that abortion must be prohibited because it encourages immorality. Do not forget that the sympathizers of abortion have arguable points as to why sometimes abortion is the only solution. This is an important consideration to make during the planning phase. It will help you to gather evidence that refutes any justifications for abortion. Having obtained the solid groundwork for your argument, the actual writing begins. The usual arrangement of introduction, body, and conclusion apply. The abortion argumentative essay will begin with a description of events that may warrant abortion. In the last sentence of the paragraph, the writer will state, for example, that abortion will not minimize pregnancy-related complications, but will instead harm reproductive organs so severely that future child-birth will be jeopardiz ed. The subsequent paragraphs will contain both sides to the controversy. You ought to give details of the dangers and advantages of abortion, afterwards stating which side is the strongest. Provide your own stance and use valid evidence to indicate why your viewpoint is accurate. For your argumentative essay to be more effective, you can include relevant and current statistics. Because abortion is a topic that goes against the teachings and morals of many cultures, it might be useful to support your viewpoint with anecdotal stories. Unless there is a clear limit that has been provided as to the length of your essay, you can include as much proof as possible to add attractiveness and substance to your paper. Once satisfied, conclude with a restatement of your position. Most importantly, avoid poignant language and do not cite non-existent sources or rely on rumors.

Types of Suffixes in English Grammar
Types of Suffixes in English Grammar In English grammar, a suffix is a letter or group of letters added to the end of a word or root (i.e., a base form), serving to form a new word or functioning as an inflectional ending. The word suffix comes from the Latin, to fasten underneath.à The adjective form is suffixal. There are two primary types of suffixes in English: Derivational suffix (such as the addition of -ly to an adjective to form an adverb) indicates what type of word it is.Inflectional suffix (such as the addition of -s to a noun to form a plural) tells something about the words grammatical behavior. Discover what famous writers, linguists, and other notable people have had to say about suffixes throughout history. Examples and Observations of Suffixes in English It is often possible to tell the era of a products development by its termination. Thus products dating from the 1920s and early 1930s often end in -ex (Pyrex, Cutex, Kleenex, Windex), while those ending in -master (Mixmaster, Toastmaster) generally betray a late-1930s or early-1940s genesis. (Bill Bryson, Made in America. Harper, 1994) Suffixes display all kinds of relationships between form, meaning, and function. Some are rare and have only vague meanings, as with the -een in velveteen. Some have just enough uses to suggest a meaning, as with -iff in bailiff, plaintiff, suggesting someone involved with law. (Tom McArthur, The Oxford Companion to the English Language. Oxford University Press, 1992) In English, only three colours become verbs by adding -en: blacken, redden, whiten. (Margaret Visser, The Way We Are. HarperCollins, 1994) The number of suffixes in Modern English is so great, and the forms of several, especially in words derived through the French from Latin, are so variable that an attempt to exhibit them all would tend to confusion. (Walter W Skeat, Etymological Dictionary of the English Language, 1882) Gazebo: The name is an 18th-century joke word combining gaze with the Latin suffix ebo, meaning I shall. (Encyclopedia Britannica Online) On Suffixes and Word Formation Primary school children would be better atà spelling if they were taught about morphemes- the units of meaning that form words- researchers claim today...For instance, the word magician consists of two morphemes: the stem magic and the suffix ian....Children find the word difficult to spell because the third syllable sounds like shun. But if they knew it was made up of the two morphemes, they could make more sense of the way it is spelled, researchers suggest. (Anthea Lipsett, Spelling: Break Words Up Into Units of Meaning. The Guardian, Nov. 25, 2008) On the -ers Suffix Call it a vast linguistic conspiracy: proponents of the major conspiracy theoà ries of the day- the truthers, the birthers, the deathers- share a suffix that makes them all sound like whackdoodles. Critical Review and Critique on Rapid Response Team Policies for Acute Essay
Critical Review and Critique on Rapid Response Team Policies for Acute Patients in Riyadh Military Hospital and the UK - Essay Example Moreover, in an article published back in 2007 entitled ââ¬Å"Safer Care for the Acutely Ill Patientâ⬠, the National Patient Safety Agency (2007) reported that 576 out of 1,804 hospital deaths were due to diagnostic errors, unrecognized patient deterioration left untreated and problems with resuscitation after a sudden cardiac arrest. It is for this reason that many countries have come up with the idea of forming Rapid Response Teams (RRT) in hospitals to address acute condition cases (Berwick et al., 2006). II. Aim Considering the average waiting time before each patient receives health care intervention, this paper will also focus on discussing rapid response for suddenly ill patients strategies used in the United Kingdom (UK) and Riyadh Military Hospital (RMH) to ensure that its health care professionals are able to deliver quality care and treatment to each patient on a timely basis. III. Critical Review and Critique on Rapid Response Team Policies for Acute Patients in Riy adh Military Hospital and the UK To enable readers to gain better understanding concerning the effectiveness and differences between the ICU RRT in Riyadh Military hospital and NHS hospitals in the UK, this report will first discuss the main purpose of RRTs. Rapid response teams in United Kingdom also referred to as medical emergency teams are multidisciplinary teams that consist of satisfactorily trained clinical personnel. In Riyadh Military hospital, the rapid response teamââ¬â¢s core obligation is to examine and evaluate patients who portray symptoms of medical deterioration outside the intensive care unit (Winters, Pham and Pronovost, 2006, p.1647; Nakagawa, 2007, p. 1371; Addington-Hall and McCarthy, 2005, p. 295). Such a team provides early rescue to patients who are in critical health condition in hospital settings. The first team of this kind was created in 1995 as an experiment team in Riyadh Military Hospital before spreading to other hospitals in United Kingdom. The t eam served as a proactive mechanism for reducing unexpected death incidences in hospitals. The core reasons for the introduction of rapid response teams in health care in United Kingdom were to increase patientsââ¬â¢ safety and to reduce the rate of inpatientsââ¬â¢ deaths in hospitals. InRiyadh Military Hospital, rapid response teams work hand in hand with primary physicians and bedside nurses to resuscitate patients in acute need of medical attention (Sebat, Musthafa and Johnson, 2007, p. 2575). a. Main Purpose of Rapid Response Teams A RRT is a medical emergency team in the intensive care unit that is responsible for assessing and giving initial treatment to deteriorating non-critical care patients (Chan et al., 2008). The purpose of a Rapid Response Team (RRT) is to quickly extract the right cause from the situation of any acute condition. In any case, where the team takes too much time to do this, then their main purpose is unaccomplished (Adams and Failano, 2011). In the UK, the main purpose of Rapid Response to Acute Illness (RRAI) is ââ¬Å"to support clinical teams in the reduction of harm and mortality associated with the acutely deteriorating patientâ⬠(1000 Lives, n.d). The policies for the RRT in United Kingdom have recently been addressed by the medical services. It has been suggested in the main protocol of the program that the response team will be selected based on certification. This is similar to the criteria of UK RRTs. The only difference is that the

Hochschild viewpoint Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Hochschild viewpoint - Essay Example Every time an employee was lost, much money was lost in the training and recruitment of new ones. The company tried to deal with this issue by offering a variety of remedial that included the solution to balance in work and family for instance, part time and sharing of jobs. To her surprise many families preferred to work more than to be with their children and family members. Hochschild interviews like six families watching on how they operate during the day and night. She also interviews various levels of professional and is surprised by what she hears. The employees at Amerco concentrate so much at work that they forget the essentials. Hochschild as a female analyzed the enormous entry of women into the labor force. It looked fair and obvious that as women left their various homes every morning along men to their various jobs to build the economy and maintain their families as they returned from work should share the house chores which never happened. Instead, as they came from work women took to all home responsibilities. Hochschild referred to it as a double shift as women worked both at work and at home (Hochschild, Pp 15) Nevertheless, there is a superwoman who can multitask and perfect both at work and home. In the present most women are faced with the challenge of what was considered a full time works in the past generation. To make it worse, as cutting workers size has occurred, the hours of work have been added for everybody. Hochschild in her book tried to show the extent to which time is ever limited that they cannot fulfill their obligations both at home and work. Statistics show that women who have small children spend more time at work than the ones with no children. ââ¬Å"Family values and reversed worldsâ⬠according to Hochschild tries to show how various family values have been invaded by work efficiencies and time pressures while places have turned out to be temporary homes for these

Conflict In The Workplace Nursing Essay
Conflict In The Workplace Nursing Essay The demand for full time nurses is continuing to boom in the global market. However, the unfortunate shortage of nurses in the global scenario is undeniable (Hunt, 2009). The rate at which nurses are graduating from universities today does not sufficiently quench the ever growing demand for nursing professionals. The issue of providing an active replacement for the nurses who have left their respective organization continues to be a source of main concern for health care institutions. The rising rates of seasoned nurses have resulted in replacing the more experienced and skilled professionals by infusing fresh graduates who lack the required skill and experience needed to effectively adapt to a clinical environment. This is coupled by the booming level of workload witnessed by these graduates who many are unable to cope with. Adding fuel to fire the initial work experience is discouraging for many graduates who hence are exhausted .This results in numerous fresh graduates completely burning out in just 18 months of their introduction to professional medical environment (World Health Organization, 2006). This exposure of the nursing graduates to the professional environment is not alienated from the concepts of socialization and professionalization. However the issues differ in this context on the pretext of the resulting personal, emotive and intellectual ride that he/she may have to witness due to role changes .These are aroused by the experiences and expectations associated with this change. Hence conflict in the workplace for new nursing graduates is the topic which will be dealt during the course of this essay. Transitions are described as a movement from one state to another. The initial 12 months of transition to a clinical environment leads to a number of conflicts. This initial experience of fresh graduates mostly is with relevance to the setting of that particular health organization. The performance of these graduates in these clinical settings is suggestive of how these institutions act as breeding grounds for these nurses by providing them with the needed educational preparation (Clark, 2009). Within this clinical setting new graduates are exposed to many formal protocols, norms, regulations, rules and expectations. In this environment of array and despair the support provided to theses nurses by the organizational inhabitants is also insufficient. The beginning year for these graduates is hence regarded by many as an obstacle year since it results to the arousal of many conflicts within the organizations. The pressure to abide by contemporary practiced is outlined by stringent ward routines which nurses may regard as ineffective but are even then forced to follow by senior nurses. Hence a resultant conflict with senior nurses may arise. Patients may too have expectations regarding how they want to be dealt with and hence taken care off. This leads to a significant in congruency in perceptions pertinent to patient-care issue and results in conflicts with patients their families and visitors (Joint Commission on Accredition of Healthcare Organizations, 2010). It also takes time and skill to attain respect and work as a team with fellow physicians. This may surface conflicts with physicians. These conflicts hamper patient care. Conflict with Senior Nurses A good senior nurse would be an individual who can efficiently run in a health institution and can organize communicate and understand the fresh nurse graduates who are relatively new and in experienced. If a senior nurse involves their subordinates in the decision making process, shows appreciation for hard work and responds by giving their juniors more power and responsibility, things may go well. However, a difficult relationship with a senior nurse is a common cause of an in favorable position adopted by senior nurses (Brown, 1992). There are hence in broad terms two main sources of conflict between the senior and fresh lotà ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬ when peoples perceptions, power or actions relating directly to the job are challenged; or when two people just dont fond of each other. The latter often called a personality clash is very common in health institutions. It can be arduous however to distinguish between the two sources of conflict (Clark, 2009). Hunt (2009) says that for many years the professional practices of nurses have been restricted by inflexible bureaucratic practices with solid structures and organizational designs. Today structures of many organizations continue to change and hence adopt a mode that is more flexible in its approach and less rigid. These structures are not only less bureaucratic but also increase a nurseà ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¢s role in decision making process. However many organizations still continue following traditional and inflexible structures which leave little or no room for new graduate nurses to exercise their respective decision making abilities .This not only makes the new graduate less autonomous but also undermines their creative potential. They hence have to reach out to their senior nurses for most issues. This not only inhibits their learning potential but also leads to numerous conflicts regarding difference in perception regarding how an issues needs to addressed and hence sorted out. The senior nurses may enrich the fresh graduates or may diminish it. Many senior nurses may even be insecure about their positions and hence in order to protect their own position may look to misguide the new graduates. They may even constantly pester them and look to undermine their services and ideas. This may lead them to constantly ignite disagreements with fresh agreements and stem feelings of resentment. Bullying and an over aggressive attitude can make the situation potentially worse. Further fresh graduates may too in their attempt to improve their own position and prove themselves disrespect their seniors. Over confidence may make them undermine the authority of seniors by going about their own respective way of doing and running things. Neeraja (2003) further adds that fresh graduates may also be unaware of how to work as a team. This may lead to further enmity of senior nurses towards them. They do not realize that their seniors may be a source of learning for them if considered so. Conflict also may simply arouse due to the senior and junior just not liking each other. Such personal disliking can hence hinder performance and job and arouse major conflicts. Conflicts with Patients The work place setting of a health institution is never void of conflict. A patient interaction with a nurse is often not in the best of circumstances. It often happens when a patient is sick and hence emotionally distressed. In such a time a fresh graduate nurse may seem the easiest and the most convenient way to vent out (Andersen, Fagerhaug, Beltz, 2010). In addition a patient nurse interaction is never black and white. Each patient has their own behavior and distinct habits .It hence may be difficult for a fresh graduate to properly reach out the patient in this time of stress and ordeal which may bring out arguments and release of pent up stress. Care of a patient demands customer service. This can be made difficult by the lack of control and alternative options experienced by patients and their families. They may be customers but they are not so by their will or their own choice. Even the calmest people can become aggressive and angry in sickness and injury. This can trigger difficult emotions. Hence nurses are handling people with extremely tense emotion and anger (Andersen, Fagerhaug, Beltz, 2010). Since the nurses are fresh they may not be skilled enough to handle such difficult people. They themselves may not be emotionally strong enough to with stand the pressure. To make matters worse nurses often look to work with families and friends who are disturbed seeing their loved ones in trouble. They themselves may have questions along with the patient with which may need to be handled with proper tact. They also may require the nurse to provide them with reassurances. If not handled in a proper manner, the nurses may find t hemselves on the brink of a major conflict (World Health Organization, 2006). Collectively, the hospital workplace of the nurse is a breeding ground for intense emotion and distress. Patients and their families is each coping with ambiguity and the potential or real effects of life-altering medical conditions. They become frustrated. They are confused. They are upset. The fresh nurses may not have the tact to decide the way information is to be conveyed to the patient and their families. With a press of a button a nurse is available. They are hence assumed to be like robots and key to all their questions. They are seen as a source of comfort and information. If they fall short of this a patient may not care how new or in experienced the nurses are and hence they may be targeted. The possible conflict scenarios involving patients and/or their families are too numerous to imagine. And hence are to some extent unavoidable. Conflict between Physician and Nurse Reports of physician nurse conflict are widespread. Power imbalance between physician and nurse, differing goals of practicing medicine and gender conflict between physicians (mostly males) and nurse (mostly females) may stem conflicts between the two parties (Kathleen McGhee, 2008). Power imbalance between physician and nurse In most societies physicians are often associated with respect and an elevated financial standing. Medical schools are virtually one of the most difficult schools to get in to and their studies too are equally exhausting requiring the brightest minds. Nurses though are not looked down upon but are obviously not given the importance and standing given to that of a physician. They are relatively paid less too. Their authority and power is hence also typically lesser than that of a proper physician. Officially the physicians are not the bosses of nurses. However because of more expertise and knowledge physicians do wind up telling the nurses what to do and what not to do. Nurses are somewhat hence seen subservient to physicians (Coombs, 2004). New graduates may not adapt to this relationship equation and may consider it as an ego blow. The nurse may feel that she/he deserves more responsibility and credit than that is given to them and hence may make them frustrated and agitated towards the physician forcing them to react in a way that may not be accepted by the physician. This hence may fuel a conflict. Differing goals of practicing medicine One core difference between the responsibilities of the physician and nurse is that a physician focuses on diagnosing and treating the disease of a patient while a nurse is focused on taking care of the patient. This may be a source of conflict between the two parties. The nurse may work more towards taking care of the patient rather than working to diagnose the disease and treat it. Hence this may upset the physicians who may undermine the nurse further and regard him/her as an obstacle in their own practice (Kathleen McGhee, 2008). Gender Conflict Though today there are many male nurses. Yet the profession is still dominated by females. Physicians on the other hand are predominantly males. Hence the conflict may result due to the prevailing conflict of the two genders in the society. Theory hence suggests that the physician may look down upon nurses solely because in some societies women are not given the standing men are. Hence fresh graduates may feel less empowered which may force them to suppress their questions and ultimately perform poorly (Kathleen McGhee, 2008). Resolving conflict As seen above the conflicts in work place may hamper patient care. Hence it is paramount for us to find effective solutions to these conflicts. One common recommendation is to improve communication between newly graduated nurses and senior nurses. Same should also be applied for the interaction between physicians and nurses and also that of patient and nurses (Huston Marquis, 2008). Inefficient communication can produce unmet expectations and lead to pent up anger and misunderstandings. This can stain relationships. But while better communication would help, it solely cannot assist filling in the power gap between a new nurse and a senior one. Same is true between the equation shared by a physician and fresh nurse graduate. Hence elevation of the status of fresh nurse graduates may help stop the power struggles. Also this will force patients to not to take the nurses for granted and to treat them with respect and gratitude rather than punching bags. Optimal method of conflict resolution provides another important solution. This fosters collaboration, harmony and cooperation which may appease the tensions that a new nurse may face with the physicians and senior nurses (Ellis Hartley, 2003). 5 steps to ensure effective conflict resolution Open. The staff should ensure that the discussion has a fruitful function and a clear goal that is understood by everyone including nurses. Clarify. This fact finding step will help one indulge deeply in all the aspects of the issue. Develop. At this point it is discussed how to effectively resolve the conflict and inhibit it from reoccurring. Agree. This will enable everyone to agree on a particular action. Close. Outline the plan for resolving the conflict and see to it that everyone including the nurses are in agreement to it. However the physicians may not be keen to take part in this medium of resolution since they may be very happy with their own status. The question hence to be addressed is that how can freshly graduate nurses be given power when their seniors and physicians are not willing to relinquish it? The solution could perhaps lie in how the hospital head deals with these new nurses. He can act as a role model for others to follow and look up to. He should convey to all the disciplines and contributions that the nurses may make. They should also develop an organizational vision of how patients and staff members should interact with the new nurses. The vision should produce the equations expected to be shared by all with these parties with nurses. These should then be translated into a set of standards, norms and rules. Inappropriate behavior will not change unless it results in consequences for the perpetrator. Hence punishments should be outlined for those not abiding by with the rules (Coombs, 2004). The physician and nursing heads need the support of hospital management in this endeavor. Hence the management should be keen to take active part in the endeavor. It should however be understood that it should not solely be the staffà ¢Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¬Ã ¢Ã¢â¬Å¾Ã ¢s and patients responsibility to make required changes but also the responsibility of the fresh nurses. They should be more aware of their responsibilities and incorporate with in them more patience. Preferably orientations should be given to these nurses for a couple weeks to help them assimilate with the environment (Joint Commission on Accredition of Healthcare Organizations, 2010). Also they should be encouraged with the help of compensations and bonuses. They should be encouraged to asked questions and have diversity in their tasks to break their monotonous routine. Conclusion An important point to note is that conflict of any genre is not conducive for a work place setting. It affects ones performance by aggravating the mental and emotional state of the person at hand. A nurse has a very important role in a health institution. The nurse helps take care of the patient. A nurse who has just joined the hospital environment may not be that confident and hence may be more prone to pressure. This is likely to impact the optimal functioning of the team since the attention may be diverted from the most important matter at hand-customer care .Poor patient care and low quality health care may be a result of the conflicts. Hence without doubt the issue of the work place conflicts of the fresh nurses needs to be addressed by individual clinicians and the overall health care staff. Even though the administrators and managers may initially opt to avoid dealing with issue and try to sweep it under the rug, it is important for them to be cognizant of the sensitivity of the situation and hence take appropriate measures to suppress these conflicts by promoting a healthy organizational culture

Childhood: The Best Phase in Life Essay
If there exists only one truth in this world than itââ¬â¢s the fact that there are no days like childhood. Childhood is the best phase of everyoneââ¬â¢s life. The good thing about those days is we are immature. Immature to truly understand the world, immature to understand relationships. Perhaps one chocolate is more than enough to make someone our friend. When some one asks us to choose between a hundred rupee note and few iron coins, the child in us shall always choose the iron coins. We have been given extraordinary power of weeping that is sufficient to melt anyoneââ¬â¢s heart. I was the naughtiest child anyone can ever imagine. I had been a reason of irritation for many of my relatives and neighbours. This post of mine is dedicated to my favorite hobby of that time, The hobby of pressing doorbells. I remember there didnââ¬â¢t exist a single house in my colony which was not a victim of my hobby. The worst of all had to bear by Sharma Uncle, whose door bell got sick of ringing. There were nearly twenty houses between the place my school bus dropped me and my home. There existed a timetable of on which day which housesââ¬â¢s bell need to be rang. But as said by someone that all bad things come to an end one day, so does good that include my hobby. It was an ordinary summer noon. My vacations were going on and I were enjoying the vacations. My father had gone office and I was all alone with my mom in my big and sweet home. My mom asked me to bring wiper from a nearby shop. When I got out, I found that street were all empty without any human soul and the whole universe including the street were convincing me that there caouldnââ¬â¢t be a better time for practical implementation of my wonderful hobby. How could I ignore when the whole universe were wishing something from me. I saw left, I saw right but how stupid I was I wouldnââ¬â¢t seen the straight. Alas! Sharma aunty were coming. The operation was implemented and the bomb had been triggered, my hands had already done something that I wouldnââ¬â¢t forget for next 20-30 years. I had no choice but one i. e. to run. I wished india was the host of Olympics in that year and I was the first one from india to win gold in athletics, but who cares for the dreams of a poor child. The only wish I wished was that she wouldnââ¬â¢t had recognised me, while running, but not every wish is destined for accomplishment. I returned back with that bloody wiper and unlike other time with no chocolates. With the hope that if the case had been tracked and accused were detected than there should be consideration of the fact that that the accused had sacrificed his lovely hocolates. My mom was eagerly waiting for me at the main door of my home and behind were standing the stone hearted Sharma aunty. She opened the gate and then what happened I canââ¬â¢t write it in words. The only thing I remember is I had been again sent for bringing wiper after 2 hours, the old one had got sacrificed and I had gained 2 inches in my dimensions. That was an end of my wonderful hobby but the creation of an everlasting mesmerizing memory. Who said pain doesnââ¬â¢t give us smile..? Iââ¬â¢m smiling today remembering the sweet pain that I got on that day

How to Arrange Prepositional Phrases
Prepositional phrases act like adjectives and adverbs to add meaning to nouns and verbs. They can also be arranged to be more effective, or condensed or eliminated to cut the clutter. Heres how: Arranging Prepositional Phrases A prepositional phrase often appears after the word it modifies: A spaceship from Venus landed in my back yard. However, like adverbs, prepositional phrases that modify verbs can also be found at the very beginning or very end of a sentence: In the morning, the Venusians mowed my lawn. The Venusians mowed my lawn in the morning. In both versions, the prepositional phrase in the morning modifies the verb mowed. Rearranging Prepositional Phrases Not all phrases are this flexible, and so we need to be careful not to confuse our readers by misplacing a prepositional phrase: The Venusians swam for two hours after lunch in my pool. This arrangement gives the idea that the visitors from Venus enjoyed lunch in the pool. If this is not the case, try moving one of the phrases: After lunch, the Venusians swam for two hours in my pool. The best arrangement is one thats both clear and uncluttered. Unpacking Prepositional Phrases Although several prepositional phrases may appear in the same sentence, avoid packing in so many phrases that you confuse the reader. The sentence below, for example, is cluttered and awkward: On a rickety stool in one corner of the crowded honky tonk, the folk singer sits playing lonesome songs on his battered old guitar about warm beer, cold women, and long nights on the road. In this case, the best way to break up the string of phrases is to make two sentences: On a rickety stool in one corner of the crowded honky tonk, the folk singer sits hunched over his battered old guitar. He plays lonesome songs about warm beer, cold women, and long nights on the road. Keep in mind that aà long sentence isnt necessarily an effective sentence. PRACTICE: Rearranging Prepositional PhrasesBreak up the long string of phrases in the sentence below by creating two sentences. Be sure to include all of the details contained in the original sentence. Up and down the coast the line of the forest is drawn sharp and clean in the brilliant colors of a wet blue morning in spring on the edge of a seascape of surf and sky and rocks. Eliminating Needless Modifiers We can improve our writing by using adjectives, adverbs, and prepositional phrases that add to the meaning of sentences. We can also improve our writing by eliminating modifiers that add nothing to the meaning. A good writer doesnt waste words, so lets cut the clutter. The following sentence is wordy because some of the modifiers are repetitious or insignificant: Wordy: The steward was really a very friendly and agreeable man, quite round, rotund, and sleek, with a very costly set of dimples around his terribly pleasant smile. We can make this sentence more concise (and thus more effective) by cutting out the repetitious and overworked modifiers: Revised: The steward was an agreeable man, rotund, and sleek, with a costly set of dimples around his smile.(Lawrence Durrell, Bitter Lemons) PRACTICE: Cutting the ClutterMake this sentence more concise by eliminating needless modifiers: It was a rainy morning, dull, wet, and gray, in the early part of the month of December. Common Prepositions about behind except outside above below for over across beneath from past after beside in through against between inside to along beyond into under among by near until around despite of up at down off with before during on without

Racism On African Americans Racism Essay - 2094 Words
Racism On African Americans The history of America has been shaped powerfully over the years by racial inequality and race. Most Americans believe that the freedom fighters in establishing of their country were motivated by their thirst for religious liberty, freedom, economic and political independence. However, it was established in terms of oppression, inequality, and domination, leading to the slavesââ¬â¢ denial of freedom. Therefore, this makes it to be the greatest inconsistency in the countryââ¬â¢s history. Itââ¬â¢s impossible for the country to put into action the idea of freedom and equality into action since we still experience these inconsistencies even today. This brings out the concept of racism in America today. Racism is the peopleââ¬â¢s perception of people from a particular race or class. Racial prejudice tends to illuminate the peopleââ¬â¢s attitude towards this particular race of people while racial discrimination is putting these ideas into action that are developed as a resul t of prejudice (Blee and Burke 2-8). Racial discrimination as well as prejudice extends far beyond typical Americanized notion of ongoing encounter between white and black individuals. For instance, Nazi Germany shared the nationalistic approach towards racism. Their ideals pertaining Jews resulted in genocide, an inevitable result. Similarly, the United States establishment resulted in a turbulent disruption as well as overturning of Native American Indians. A Little Bit of Stress Is Useful Free Essays
string(33) " someone depends on that person\." ââ¬Å"A little bit of stress is useful ââ¬â it keeps people in their toes. â⬠Discuss. In order to answer this question one must first define the various elements in the question. We will write a custom essay sample on A Little Bit of Stress Is Useful or any similar topic only for you Order Now Stress can be defined as ââ¬ËThe harmful physical and emotional responses that occur when the requirements of the job do not match the capabilities, resources or needs of the workerââ¬â¢ . One can define useful, as stress making a person happy, productive and efficient. Also in terms of an organisation making it successful, efficient and effective. You should use more industrial words here eg producing more units Millions of people suffer from stress on a daily basis. Stress can affect a personââ¬â¢s physical health such as increased heart rate and rise in blood pressure, and can affect a person mentally such as depression. This in turn for organisations can be devastating and potentially detrimental, as this can lead to poor industrial relations and high absenteeism, ââ¬ËIHC estimates that 13. 4 million working days a year are lost to stressââ¬â¢. On the face of it this would suggest that stress is indeed a bad thing. Indeed a study reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association showed that those participants who experienced chronic high stress on the job had a considerably greater chance of suffering another heart attack than did those in less stressful jobs. Furthermore there were many cases in world war one of sudden deaths to soldiers who had not endured any wounds, these men probably died of shock when responding to stress. In 1967 Holmes and Rahe carried out a study now called the stress scale where they looked at 5,000 medical patientsââ¬â¢ medical records as a way to determine specifically which stressful events caused illnesses, in hierarchical order from the most stressful events to the least. Death of a spouse topped the list followed by, divorce, martial separation and a jail sentence. All these events are intrinsically negative and as such it would be easy to conclude that stress is bad for anyone as it is caused by bad events. However Hooshmand conversely states that ââ¬Ëstress is just another misunderstood term in the medical practiceââ¬â¢ he goes on to say that ââ¬Ëthe phrase any stress is bad (is) nothing further from the truthââ¬â¢. Indeed Lazarus mentions how ââ¬ËHans Selyve suggested two types (of stress) distress and eustress. Distress is the destructive stress illustrated by anger and aggression and it is said to damage health. Eustress is the constructive type, illustrated by emotions associated with emphatic concerns for othersâ⬠¦ ompatible with or protective of good healthââ¬â¢ This is significant, according to Selyve and Lazarus there is, as mentioned above, a ââ¬Ëdistressââ¬â¢ type of stress which is bad- this is where there is too much stress. For example if a manager were to give a deadline which was impossible this may over stimulate and de motivate an employee causing them to do no work. But also mentioned is a ââ¬Ëeustressââ¬â¢ type of stress which can be seen as ââ¬Ëusefulââ¬â¢ and healthy ââ¬Ëkeeping people on their toesââ¬â¢. This would be where there are small amounts of stress for example if a manager was to set a strict but reasonable deadline it may push the employee on to work harder, stimulating an increasing the employees energy levels to meet the challenge . This shall be mentioned in more detail later on in the essay. Although Lazarus goes on to mention that this hypothesis ââ¬Ëhas not been adequately supportedâ⬠¦. by empirical researchââ¬â¢ there is other evidence to support this claim of eustress. In 1908 Robert M. Yerkes and J. D. Dodson created an experiential relationship between performance and pressure, now known as ââ¬ËYerkes-Dodson Law ââ¬â¢. The law shows that performance actually increases with pressure i. e. stress: the eustress that Selyve went on about, but only up to a point. When levels of pressure become too high, performance decreases, this is known as distress. The process is illustrated graphically as a rounded, inverted U-shaped curve which increases and then decreases with higher levels of pressure. Clearly according to this law one wants to reach the optimum stress levels which is small amounts of stress to keep one on its toes but not too much as this could lead to depression and potentially heart problems. It is now important to look at specifically how eustress can help and be healthy for you. From ââ¬ËYerkes-Dodson Lawââ¬â¢ it would not be unreasonable to suggest that eustress is basically stress in small, not large amounts. Leitnerpg states that ââ¬Ëaccording to Allen 1983 eustress represents challenge and stimulation for healthy growth and developmentââ¬â¢ this would suggest that eustress stress gives you the competitive edge roviding you with focus and determination. There are many examples above of stressors likely to produce distress such as divorce but Leitner mentions stressors which produce eustress such as ââ¬Ëroller coasters and skiingââ¬â¢ It is important to note that people are actually paying for these stressors, thus they can be considered us eful stresses. Some people even thrive on the excitement of stresses this can be best shown in adrenaline junkies, as they seek activities that increase their hormone adrenaline production. Examples of these stress seekers include racing car drivers, politicians and bungee jumpers. It is well known that many employees will leave there work to the last minute they need the stress and adrenaline to get their work done, if there is no stress it is probable this work would never be done. Indeed it is possible to have stressors which can cause both eustress and distress such as exercise, which can be considered a eustress, but when overdone can lead to injuries and illness. Selye points out that ââ¬Ëwhether an activity produces eustress or distress depends on the participantââ¬â¢s perception of the activityââ¬â¢ this can be supported by a quote from Shakespeare ââ¬Ëthings are neither good nor bad, but thinking makes them soââ¬â¢ . Indeed everyone is different when dealing with stress whether stress is good or bad for someone depends on that person. You read "A Little Bit of Stress Is Useful" in category "Papers" This can be supported by Type A and B personality theory created in the 1950ââ¬â¢s . This puts people into two groups . Type A people are according to Friedman, M. Rosenman ââ¬Ëimpatient, excessively time-conscious, insecure about their status, highly competitive, hostile aggressive, and incapable of relaxationââ¬â¢ . They established a link between type A people and coronary heart disease after analysing data from thousands of people who had beforehand been placed into either type A or Type B group. Whilst type B people are almost the opposite of type A people, relaxed in nature with no sense of time urgency and less easily stressed. Quote The above evidence would suggest that the amount of stress does not matter to a great extent but what does is the type of person as, according to this theory there are two types of people, type A personalities will deal worse with stress than type B personalities. It would not be unreasonable to suggest that a small amount of stress for type B personalities maybe good for that person ensuring they are focused and have more of a sense of time urgency, however the same amount of stress mposed on a type A personality could caused aggravation, anxiety and maybe even heart problems. Indeed some employers will look for employees who not only can naturally deal with stress but actually thrive on it. An example of this can be given of Alan Sugar who makes it clear in the program the apprentice that he is looking for people who can deal with stressful situations by testing them as part of the recruitment process . An essential part of the recruitment procedure is to be able to keep your nerve and defend yourself in the public forum of the board room, an artificially created stressful environment. In this day and age there is bound to be stress due to the nature of work and the fast moving environment around us, it is how we deal with this stress which can determine whether this stress is useful or not. ââ¬ËYerkes-Dodson Lawââ¬â¢ dictates that if there is too much stress this can reduce the performance of the individual, thus it is sometimes important for the individual to be able to reduce this stress in order to produce optimal performance. Indeed Ward states that ââ¬Ëin learning to manage stress effectively you may come to believe that the experiences of stressful periods may become beneficial to you. There are many different ways of dealing with stress and how well you deal with stress will determine how it affects you. A person can exercise to help reduce stress, ââ¬Ëexercise creates a sense of confidence and control, which reduces stressââ¬â¢ this does not mean just occasional exercise but exercise on a daily basis if possible. Exercise also directly leads to relaxation of the body which can help reduce stress. Having the required sleeping hours is also vital, this will refresh yourself making you feel better the next morning and ready for work. If one does not have the required sleeping hours necessary it can lead to tiredness which can lead directly to stress. So far mainly people and employees have been looked upon, it is important to look at how organisations as a whole deal with stress and if they find it useful or not. Organisations are becoming more and more aware of the importance of stress and its impact on employees. Ward mentions some ways in which companies are taking action to combat stress ââ¬Ëmore are referring employees for health and fitness tests. Others are running stress management courses and providing stress counselling for employeesââ¬â¢ . In view of this one can clearly see how important stress is in organisations. Some companyââ¬â¢s thrive on stress these mainly seem to be financial orientated organisations. Who are and need to be extremely competitive with other similar organisations, this stress pushes the organisation on to its limits increasing the efficiency and effectiveness of the company. It is not uncommon nowadays for organisations to deliberately impose stress on employees; this can be done by paying employees with high commissions, meaning they are not guaranteed money at all. Some employees actually enjoy this stress, they enjoy the challenge and the buzz. Indeed this can be directly linked to job satisfaction. Other organisations in the health field such as hospitals try to reduce stress, as they feel any stress imposed on patients could be dangerous, one of the things they do to reduce stress is painting the hospital walls green as it is proven that green is a low stress colour can decrease stress. Clearly in the health field stress is deemed as bad but maybe in the financial field stress is seen as useful pushing on the company to success. Thus the usefulness of stress depends upon which type of organisation itââ¬â¢s for. Obviously though too much stress in a financial organisation can cause absenteeism which will ultimately lose the company money. To conclude with regards to organisations as a whole, it just depends on the type of organisation to how useful stress is. In terms of individuals, small amounts of stress which Selye describes as eustress can help keep people on their toes, keeping them focused and acting as a stimulant, pushing them on to work. However it can completely depend on the person. A Type A person may not be able to take that stress and instead of ââ¬Ëkeeping them on their toesââ¬â¢ may cause panic and anxiety. Nonetheless, in saying this, as Yerkes-Dodson law dictates some stress is needed to achieve optimum performance and give people a challenge, which increases job satisfaction. Thus it would be accurate to conclude that ââ¬Ëa little bit of stress is useful ââ¬â it keeps people on their toesââ¬â¢. You would improve the structure if you cross reference more eg when you are talking about how stress needs to be in the right quantity, it might be helpful if you mention that later on you will be talking about how stress an be controlled. If you need to add any more ââ¬â you could talk further about the work life balance ââ¬â ie however stressful the job ââ¬â outside activities are essential A further element you could talk about ââ¬â when discussing different personalities ââ¬â is that what is stressful for some is not for oth ers. A good example might be of mothers who stay at home and look after children ââ¬â for some this is v stressful and for others it is an ideal environment. You could also add an international dimension eg in France there is huge job security and longer holidays (I think) in America holidays are short and there is v little job security How to cite A Little Bit of Stress Is Useful, Papers

Implicit Association Test free essay sample
I donââ¬â¢t know if that is true because I donââ¬â¢t think that I think that way, but maybe it is possible to have a slight automatic preference without realizing it, as if I do it subconsciously. Here is a screen shot of my results. I hope that you are able to read this because I found it to be both very interesting and surprising at the same time. After taking this test, I am left to wonder if most people have a slight automatic preference for some races over others or if I am in the minority in that category. Do you agree or disagree with the result? à I am not sure if I agree or disagree with the results of the test. I have always considered myself to be a person who has no prejudice in my heart and that I looked at every race the same way. We will write a custom essay sample on Implicit Association Test or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It shames me to admit that a few years ago when I was driving a cab for almost a year, blacks were in general the worst tippers and many did not tip at all which over time did cause me to stereotype blacks as being lousy tippers. I have talked to a few servers in restaurants about it and most of them say the same thing. The blacks the rode in my cab were no more rude or polite than anyone else, so I never hated them, I just got to the point that I did not want to pick them up anymore because I felt they would not tip me no matter what I did. I know that was a bad way of thinking and I donââ¬â¢t think that way anymore, or so I thought until I got the results of this test. On the other hand the biggest tip I ever got was from a black man. I donââ¬â¢t like being this way and I am going to work on changing myself. I do have black friends, so hopefully it wonââ¬â¢t be hard for me to change. Do you think that the results are valid for you? Explain why or why not. After answering the first two questions I would have to say that yes the results are valid for me. I know that in my heart of hearts that I am not at all racist and I donââ¬â¢t have a big problem as far as stereotyping goes, but apparently it is there in me somewhere. I really think that whatever little bit of stereotyping I do have comes from when I drove a cab and most of the blacks I picked up were lousy tippers. I understand that not all blacks are that way and that I had a lot of bad luck with the blacks that I picked up. The thing that makes me think however is that all of the other drivers that I had talked to about this said the same thing, but I think part of that is because many of the blacks I picked up were in St. Pete which many parts of that city are very poor and have a lot of crime. In your opinion, is prejudice easy or difficult to measure accurately? Why? I think that it is very difficult to measure most of the time. The exception is in cases when people are proud of being prejudice and have to problem admitting it like in the KKK. The reason why I think it is very difficult to measure is because people donââ¬â¢t want to admit it, donââ¬â¢t know that they are prejudice or think they are not when maybe they are just a little, or just donââ¬â¢t feel comfortable talking about it. As I said in the first question, I did not even know that I still had a slight automatic preference for European American compared to African Americans, and I canââ¬â¢t imagine that I am the only one like that.
